About
Achaderry Estate, is a predominantly wooded estate of around 160 hectares, situated in the heart of Brae Lochaber at the junction of Glen Roy and Glen Spean, and within walking distance of the centre of the village of Roy Bridge. The estate contains a variety of native woodland and open ground habitats, as well as a number of small lochans and extends down to the River Roy itself.
As well as the importance of these habitats for biodiversity, Achaderry is also located within the Parallel Roads SSSI and has significant geodiversity interest.
Achaderry House and Steadings were built in 1869 and designed by architect,John Rhind, as was the Roy Bridge Inn and Drill Hall.
We are under 15 minutes’ drive from the mountain gondola on Aonach Mor. In summer the gondola provides visitors with a great chance to take in the views of Britain’s highest mountain, Ben Nevis, and also access to one of the world’s most exhilarating downhill rides. In winter it gives skiers and snowboarders quick access to the mountain’s upper slopes.
This privatley owned estate has opened its doors to the public by introducing some stunning nature walks around the lochans offering good views of species in their natural habitat. There are more nature trails and footpaths planned for around the estate which includes a walk down by the River Roy to see some of the red stone used to build the bridge and give the village of Roy Bridge its name. The woodland of Achaderry is predominately Birchwood. Birch are a pioneer species, they are short-lived, with typical lifespans being between 60 and 90 years old. You can see other species such as sessile oak, goat willow, mountain ash, hazel as well as some new Scots Pine which are now taking hold in some areas, slowly creating their own mini Caledonian Forest.
There are many mycorrhizal associations seen with the trees such as Hoof Fungus and old Mans Beard. Hummocks can be seen all over, some appearing on veins of white quartzite. Various mammels live on the estate, fox, hare, deer and pine martin are all seen whilst walking around. The scenery around the estate is natures best, and the views to the south and west provide a breathtaking panoramic of the Grey Corries and Aonoch Mor, part of the Nevis Range. The Northern outlook is up Glen Roy and onto the Paralell roads.
